Gam3rCon Events (OSR & Judge Dredd Minis)

Just a heads-up San Diegans who aren't heading to San Diego Comic Con, Gam3rCon is coming up.

I will be running multiple sessions of Judge Dredd miniature games, i have a lot more new models now as well, so I will be running a bit of a different scenario. I still have to design it, but it should be interesting. I think it will be Judge Giant running a cadet through their Full Eagle Day. This will give the players a chance to see an actual hero in play; and make them have to attempt to make arrests. This will be Giant and a cadet versus a group of punks (played by me or by another player.)

As far as Roleplaying sessions; I didn't end up with DCCRPG slots, since another GM filled up all the slots for DCCRPG, but I hope I'll get a chance to play then.

Anyway, that leaves me open to running some new stuff; As part of my review cycle for Monsters & Magic, I'm going to run it at SDGC! I will be running the adventure contained with the book, since it's a new game it shouldn't be like running into Mr. Bubbles for the 10th time in Paranoia.

Secondly, Machinations of the Space Princess was released!!! FLICK YEAH!!! So I will definitely be running that!! Even if we JUST go through character creation and run the introductory adventure.

http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/images/384/116412.jpg
Machinations of the Space Princess is a Science-Fantasy role-playing game. That means it’s very much about style over substance, mixing science-fiction, magic and
psionics in a game world that owes much more to Metal Hurlant and Star Wars than it does to 2001 or Bova’s Grand Tour. This is a game of strangeness and fun, of space
pirates and beautiful alien princesses, of living planets and robot hordes, of blasters at noon.
This is…

Sexy, sleazy, swords and sci-fi!

A full game combining old and new school thinking, packed with GM and player advice and with simple tools for creating your own monsters, adversaries, weapons, armour, ships and alien races.

Gam3rCon Gam3sBowl - Epic Sean Con Report

Gam3rcon was freaking Awesome, with a capital A. Sadly I only remember two of the games I played; one was called Smashup, and the other Ultimate Werewolf. Smashup was fun, but is a little complex and takes a while. There are 8 factions in the game; zombies, robots, wizards, ninjas, aliens, dinosaurs, fairies, and pirates. You combine two, and fight to try and destroy bases. It's really fun, and I played it about four times.

Ultimate werewolf is a great party game. All players gather around the table, and the dealer gives everyone a card. Some are werewolves, and some are villagers. Every turn (or night), somebody is killed by the werewolves, and in the metaphorical morning, all the villagers gather to prosecute villagers as hidden werewolves, then lynch the person if they don't give a good enough defense. All in all, it was an awesome game, and an Awesome day. With a capital A.

Gam3rCon Fun & 42

So today is my 42nd Birthday, I find it very telling that on my Meaning of Life Birthday, I  find it QUITE telling that I spend it playing games....Games keep me young and my brain active.

First day of Gam3rCon game bowl was today, had a lot of fun. I ran 4 Cadet Judges into the Cursed Earth on a Hot Dog run.  The players who had some knowledge of Dredd, and some knowledge of Traveller, took to the system very quickly and fun was had by all.

I will be attempting to run Dredd again tomorrow, but, the Hot Dog Run to Haven, will NOT be the same. It will be similar, but, different indeed.

In the second slot I got to play in a Old World of Darkness Vampire. I played a Toreador Author, I chose to have Raymond E. Feist as my sire, heh. It was a very good game that Chris Czerniak ran. It was a more poilitical type of game, with all the elders disappearing from the City, victims of Tremere blood magic. A quick intro scene led to some skullduggery, and sneaking. This led to political destruction of the rival, and then a final confrontation. Good game. I like playing at Gam3rCon...good people, fun games.

Gam3rCon Gam3sBowl - Feb 9th-10th

Come on down and celebrate my Meaning of Life birthday, by playing in my Judge Dredd game! It will be one of the last RPGs I run for Mongoose, but my hours doing demo will be getting me more JDMG figures, so at Gam3rCon during Comic-Con I can run some JDMG!

Now, with this writing gig I got my Alpha Test for Unleashed is going to be pushed til KingdomCon. I just can't write 30k words for that project, and Set-up my highly "alpha" game at the same time, and money and me are like estranged lovers...I need more.

Check it out:

SDGC Saturday

Saturday
San Diego Gam3rCon 2012
Saturday was pretty good, Got the Traveller game run, unfortunately, it was just one player, so I had the boys jump in again to fill the gap. I think for my next events, I'll just run a prepared Mongoose Game from what I have ready, whatever people want to play, sweet lets do it. My Traveller player also showed for the Paranoia game, but...You just CAN NOT run Paranoia with 1 player, even if the boys jumped in 3 players isn't quite enough to have it be the level of Mandatory Fun required by the Computer! So the boys went down to the Video Game Lounge, and I talked to the USAopoly people about the risk games they've been releasing. I hadn't really looked into them too much, just kind of glanced at them, but once I had the Solid Snake version and the new Halo Legendary Risk explained, I must say, there are some pretty slick mods in there to speed up play, and make each game different, because let's face it, normal Risk is normal Risk, once you past the first few turns, your single preferred strategy usually takes over, and the rest is up to luck.

I wasn't able to get Luke to spill the beans on what the new edition is coming out, but he did say there's going to be a big announcement soon. This is pure hopeful speculation, what if there was a Game of Thrones Risk...now that would be sweet. I thought that after I saw a map of Westeros at SDCC....

The new USAopoly Halo Legendary, with Achievement victory conditions, and a ship that moves from port to  port making things really interesting.

New Starcraft Risk map for the soon to be released StarCraft Risk

After talking Risk for awhile, I decided my Paranoia game wasn't going to happen so I decided to look for something to play, well at the Game Day in January, I played DCC RPG, and it was a blast, this time, I was given a pre-gen, and Steven told me NO CHAOTIC Character (due to the near TPK that my chaotic character created in January.) ...This was a play-test for a module that's in development currently. One of the actresses and the guitar player from Spider Baby the Musical were in the game as well (and another of the actors joined us later.). The module was fun, I had a blast with Smalls the halfling, a haberdasher by trade, who did carry his shears, and actually killed one of the goblinoid creatures with them. Steven Thivierge ran the game, and ran it well. Well enough that I'm pretty convinced I do need to pick up DCCRPG.
Thanks to everyone who played, I had a blast! And thanks to Steven for running such a fun game.

You can even see "Small's" prop scissors where I was sitting!

SDCC&SDGC

Obviously with this being Comic Con week, things are a bit different on the blog. I'm rushing to finalize preparations for the games I'm running,

I'm also going to be helping out the Steve Jackson Games MIBs in the Comic Con game room after I get off work on Friday. So I'll be writing an article on the Game Room at Comic Con, I had thought the games had all been moved out of the Convention center, but Robert told me they're still there.

I know there are PFS events at Comic Con, however with PFS events available every week at normal stores, it would take some special boons to entice me into a PFS game at ComicCon. (Though who knows, maybe there are some special race boons you can get at SDCC, I know Kingdom Con had a special boon you could earn...)

After Con I will be getting back to reviews, I will also post both of my scenarios that I'm running, including pics of my special hand-outs for the Insane 'IA, IA, Paranoia' event. It should be an event to remember...

Check out the line-up of events at the Gam3rCon, USAopoly Table-top Lounge.
My games are:

Saturday: 1:00pm            "Lockdown on Lazarus V"  TRAVELLER (MGP)

You've been released from service, you have arrived at the Space Station Lazarus V with some cash in your pocket and the clothes on your back. Now to relax...or so you thought...

Saturday: 6:00pm            "Ia, Ia, Paranoia!"     PARANOIA-Troubleshooters (MGP)

Troubleshooters report to sector HPL for an important assignment for the computer. Seems some tentacles have made it into the vats and are killing citizens...it's up to you to save Alpha Complex.

Actual gameplay may vary from initial taglines.

Gam3rCon is growing, jump in early!
Tickets available here!

1 Week countdown

Wow, time is flying up on me, working on both scenarios, when I ran "Lockdown on Lazarus V" it was in a brand new rough format. Ia, Ia, Paranoia is being rewritten as pure insanity, which is what good Paranoia adventures are about.

Copied Character sheets, and got more business cards printed, super busy day printing....

Hope it's all worth it, volunteer meeting for Gam3rCon tomorrow...whew...

Gam3rCon - Traveller & Paranoia

I will be running Character creation for the  Traveller  event, so everyone who wants to play will have the opportunity to roll up a character, even establishing connections to the other characters. I will also have some pre-gens, but its more fun to run with a custom made character with your own name and vision, besides I'd rather have an ABB58B character than a 787986 character any day...

I will be rolling with pre-genned characters for Paranoia however. HPL sector requires sacrifices!

Atomic Robo @ Gam3Day

So, Gam3day...EPIC!

Mike Olson came down to run an alpha playtest for the FATE based Atomic Robo role-playing game. It was a Super Secret play-test! And it was really fun.

Pretty cool because Mike has come up with some epic concepts for this specific game. The pyramid of skills isn't present in its current incarnation, and Mike has emphasized quick character creation over advancement, to make this game play like the Atomic Robo comics. When you want to come up with some character's background, you can go back and play an earlier episode in the character's life. If the other characters aren't in that story, no problem, you just create some other characters instead and run with it. Organizations will be a major way in which your characters advance, granting different aspects to the characters by being members of the organization. (Remember this is an Alpha version and nothing is set in stone)

This game does use FUDGE dice rather then d6s like Legends of Anglerre. I prefer the FUDGE dice even though it does mean a different type of die you need to own, but you only need 4 to play, so it's not very expensive. Besides FUDGE dice are simple to use.

So Mike said he used Kerberos Club as one of his references, but he didn't use a lot from it, one of the things he kept which I really like is the Collateral Damage rules. Makes for a really interesting scene when you let a Robot crush the floor under you instead of crushing your head! Then of course you fall through. I will definitely be watching what's going on with great interest.

Stunts are in, refresh is out, in keeping with the simple system. (currently, who knows what the FUTURE MAY BRING!)

The first PUBLIC play-test will be at GenCon:

If you're eager to check out Atomic Robo's progress, we'll be conducting the first public playtests at GenCon in August. It looks like we ("we" being Andy Blanchard, Chris Czerniak, Morgan Ellis, and myself) will be offering six scheduled sessions between us:

Thursday, August 16th at 2:00 pm
Friday, August 17th at 2:00 pm (two sessions)
Saturday, August 18th at 12:00 pm
Saturday at 2:00 pm (two sessions)And possibly a Sunday game as well. Odds are also good that you'll see some ARRPGgames at Games on Demand, too.
You can find all of them in the schedule as Atomic Robo: Sneak Preview. Not an evocative name, maybe, but it gets the point across. The blurb's the same for all of them:
Action! Science! Robots! Playtest the new RPG adaptation of the hit indie comic book series Atomic Robo, coming soon from Evil Hat. No experience with FATE or higher-dimension mathematics required.

Gam3rCon Gamesday coming up

If you check the Convention Schedule, you'll see the Gam3rCon Gameday is coming up...THIS SUNDAY

Chris Czerniak has arranged lots of gaming for this one day event that only costs $5.  Here's what's on the docket: (I'll probably be playing Dominion until 2:00 when the event I want to play in happens....)

Pathfinder (12:00)
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game puts you in the role of a brave adventurer fighting to survive in a world beset by magic and evil! Take on the role of a canny fighter hacking through enemies with an enchanted sword, a powerful sorceress blessed with magic by the hint of demon blood in her veins, a wise cleric of gods benevolent or malign, a witty rogue ready to defuse even the deadliest of traps, or any of countless other heroes. The only limit is your imagination!

Call of Chtulhu (5:00)
If you have ever been enthralled by a ghost story or spellbound at a horror movie, you are in for a treat. Part the veil that separates frail humanity from the terror that lurks beyond space and time. Investigate forgotten ruins, haunted woods, and nameless menaces.

Savage Worlds: Slipstream (12:00)
Beyond the black holes lies the Slipstream, a pocket universe of shattered worlds, desperate aliens, and savage monsters. Ruling over the shattered isles is the diabolical Queen Anathraxa, who some say is close to finding a way to escape this interstellar prison.

Marvel RPG (5:00)
Greetings True Believers! Today you and your friends can play as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Miss Marvel, and/or Spiderman as they respond to a break out at the supermax prison facility for super powered criminals on Rykers Island in New York City. Make Mine Marvel! and Try Marvel Heroic Roleplaying today.

Fiasco: Hero City (12:00)
Welcome to Hero City, home to some of the world's most popular superheroes. Heroes like Captain Crusader! Masked Revenger! Dynamo-Man! And the rest of the Defenders of Justice!

Weekend Review - Gam3rCon edition

The weekend review this week is from the games we played at Gam3rCon. (just me on Friday)

Friday night, Well I got my first taste of 4e with a foray into Gamma World, and I must say, the taste was non-descript. While the changes from 3.0 aren't as drastic as I had thought they were, it was about what I expected. But onto the Gamma World front, the changes in the way characters play completely changes the existing world, part of what I enjoyed about Gamma World was the exploration for ancient tech, the secret societies, and the good and the bad mutations. Pure Strain humans, mutant humans, mutant animals, etc, made the game really fun. Exploring to find old tech and the slow progression is what I liked about it. So it was different, kinda fun, but I think I'll take a pass on it. If constantly mutating characters are your thing, by all means have fun. The second game I played on Friday was Guillotine, a Wizards of the Coast card game from 1997,which you take part in three days of the French Revolution as a competing executioner, most the nobles are valued from 1 for a rival executioner to 5 points for Marie Antoinette or King Louis, then there are negative cards such as the -1 Martyr or the -3 Hero of the People. . You take turns using action cards to do things such as move a noble in the line, giving someone the next noble in line with the after you card or even stealing a noble.  After the action phase you take the head of the noble at the front of the line, executing any special actions that card may have. It's a very clever game and I highly recommend it for a quick game.

Saturday, The boys and I started out with Outbreak Undead. Now this is a really fun game, while it could probably be played with other systems, the SPEW-AI character creation rules let you actually create yourself (to the extent you answer honestly) and includes an interesting mechanic called Gestalt dice, which are handed out equal to your age as a one-time bonus, to grant use of specific skills you really know, but aren't on the character sheet. The game is designed for campaign play, and I believe the system really kicks in for extended play, for one-shots, it's pretty easy to blow through your ammo and survive the encounter, but what do you do next time with no ammo, and 20 additional zombies. This is on my future purchase list.  The next game we played was Zombie Munchkin!! You know how much we love Munchkin, and the boys had been wanting to play this. There was no disappointment, the game played pretty fast, and within an hour or so, we were done, I used the tricky card which allowed me to piggy back off Ian's combat and steal the two levels I need to victory! Now Zombies seems slightly higher power level than regular Munchkin. But having Zombie hordes jumping in on combats tends to make it more hectic, I'm curious to see how it plays out.Boys and I played Guillotine to pass the time before we got into the Outbreak Undead game, they really liked it too.

Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!! Well I was prepping for my own Zombie fun running "28 Sleepcycles Later" Alpha Complex under seige of the walking dead in ZOM sector, but while I was preparing my scenario, Sean got to try out his new ICONS RPG (which he won for the Zombie Kill of the Day, shanking a Zombie with a toothbrush in the eyeball) with Ian, as Chris Czerniak ran them through a quick scenario, the boys really enjoyed it, and I believe THEY specifically will recommend it. After they finished, with Icons, that group came over and played PARANOIA! Running the pure mayhem of Paranoia was a blast, from the mumbling mousy violet citizen with the kill first fine second attitude briefing officer to the PLC room with one clerk, and 2 miles of empty line, 500 windows and a 30 minute break, after the brisk jog to reach the one clerk the Hygiene Officer ran a surprise inspection , which resulted in not one but TWO emergency scrubdowns, the trip to R&D resulted in the first clone replacement as a the tiny closet was ripe for theft by the Pro-Tech secret mission, but the 20 rolled on the sleight of hand caused a hilariously deadly incident. Then it was onto ZOM sector, where more experimental weaponry and mutant powers led to more deaths and a brain scrub at debriefing. I always recommend Paranoia. I know everyone had fun, from the newby role player to the veteran of Paranoia, and I know one was talking about convincing his friends to get into it...My job is just beginning....

Game on!

Gam3rCon, sans Comic Con

Well my hook-up for Comic Con fell through, so no SDCC2011. Which is horribly tragic in and of itself, in addition, no job means no Rusty Venture Lunchbox which was an SDCC Con Exclusive!!!!!

However on the 'made of awesome'(tm) side of the house, Gam3rCon has been a blast. Got to try out Gamma World 4e on Friday night (Zombies ftw). Got to play Outbreak Undead today, and Munchkin Zombie. Tomorrow I'm running my Paranoia event...28 Sleepcycles later, so all in all, it's been a very Undead Con. I will be doing a quick review for all games played for this weekend review. Oh we also played Guillotine, pretty fun game, 3 days of removing the nobility's heads in Revolutionary France.

Got to see "The Gam3rs" today with the boys, and it is Completely 'made of awesome'(tm). Whilst there are plenty of F Bombs, it's hilarious, and I highly recommend seeing it. It is playign through Next week. Unfortunately I wasn't able to afford Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.Gam3rCon.com
It's at the 10th Avenue Theater downtown, across from Papa John's.

Interviews with Walt and Brian. And I think I'll Have the boys interview Chris, who's running the games, and is a big San Diego Game Scene figure.
