Kingdom Con report by Epic Sean

Kingdom con made me feel like a king. It could easily be my favorite convention, even above comic con.

The con was divided into four sections, as follows in order of favorite to least favorite; The Tabletop room, the Board/Card game room, the RPG room, and the Wargaming room.

I loved the Tabletop room because of the Malifaux. Malifaux was the thing that I spent hours playing. I got to participate in an achievement league, and an actual tournament. I did well in the achievement league, but failed miserably at the tournament. I won the Morgue Base for getting 5th place.

I liked the Board/Card game room, because of the variety. One wall was completely lined with games. Over 100 games sat on a table waiting to be checked-out. The rest of the walls were lined with vendors from Villainous Lair, At Ease Games, and Gamecrafter. The rest of the room was filled with tables, with tons of people at them. I spent most of the first day in there doing a Warhammer kit-bash.

I spent about a total of three hours in the RPG room. All I played was an Interface Zero 2.0 playtest that my dad, Ron, was running for us. He wrote the entire equipment section in the book, just in case you didn’t know.

Last was the Wargaming room. (No offense to any wargamers out there) The only reason why I was in there was to do a raffle. Of course I didn’t win anything, but the total value of the prizes was $800.

I forgot to mention one last room, but I’ve saved the best for last. The Treasure Room. So much loot and swag filled the room, and you could barely walk around in it.  wargames, rpg games, card games, board games, and much more. I got tons of stuff; Iron Kingdoms 3.5, Heap, Infernal Contraptions, terrain for Malifaux, and lots of little insignificant swag. Overall, the convention was TOTALLY. FREAKING. EPIIIIC!!!!

PS. If you go to the con after about 11:00pm, you will be surrounded by drunkards. If you are over 21, you can join them. If not, LEAVE. Trust me, it isn’t worth it to stay after that.

Game: The Forge of Fury
System: D&D 3.5 ed
Number of players: 5
Day: Friday 2pm
Length: 4
The legend of the smith Durgeddin the Black is well known in the region.  In each of the small, scattered towns you’ve passed through, you’ve heard stories of wondrous treasure hidden in long lost dwarven vaults and a pitiless war of vengeance between dwarf and orc a hundred years past.
You have come to Blasingdell, a small mining town on the northern frontier, to see if there is anything to these stories.  Your map shoes the old dwarf hold likes a few days march to the north.  Your party knows each other and came prepared for a dungeon crawl.

Game: Traditions of Candlerote
System: Mage the Ascension (nWod)
Description: Young mages around the world come to the school of Candlerote to improve their skills as well as understand the magic of their fellow students. Every 3 months a new professor from a different Tradition teaches classes but this semester things have gotten complicated. The current professor is hiding something and there someone using the portal in the basement. It is up to this years students to figure out what is going on in this Harry Potter meets Mage the Ascension adventure.
Players: 6
Time: 8-12pm

GameOutbreak Undead: The Fair King Zoo...
Description:Your party approaches the Zoo. The Zoo clearly shows its age as ivy grows on the thick 20 foot high concrete walls that surround it. Some say it used to be a prison built back in the twenties. No matter what, its walls were distinctly built to keep things in. You squint through the darkness and can barely make out razor wire on the top.

It’s unclear whether or not this was always a part of the building, or if it was added during the course of events of the last several weeks. A broken sign hangs above the entrance: “Welcome to the Fair King Zoo.”
GM: Brett Laynam
Players: 4-8
Time: 8pm

Name of Game: The Shadow of Yesterday
Game system: The Solar System (http://files.crngames.com/cc/tsoy2/solar_system.html)
Number of Players: 5
Length: 4 Hours
Time: 8pm
Description of Game: A description of TSoY in general (and if so, see the link below), or what I have in mind? I've taken inspiration from the session we played at Gamercon (homes destroyed, lives shattered, vengeance to be had) but in my own vein. These 5 characters are the survivors of a brutal attack on their tribe by the nation to the south (the Ammeni). There will be clues to be found that suggest some of their people have been taken as slaves by the invaders, giving the players a possible thread to follow to free their fellow tribesmen (if they don't take the bait I'll set the damn forest on fire, though I was going to do that anyway). Either way they should head south, though I've got contingency plans in the making if the group decides to abandon their people. Time permitting, by the end of the session we will have caught up with the attacking forces and freed the slaves taken from the tribe.

Con Report: Kingdom Con Saturday

Saturday is THE main day for Kingdom Con. There was a massive Warhammer 40k tournament, The Warmachine qualifier for GenCon, and the Game of Thrones GenCon Qualifier.

Infinity demo table,  4 on 4 game, I really like the hacking in the game, it's pretty kick-ass.

Nice Rezolution set-up by Aberrant

Aberrant has greatly expanded the line of Minis for WarLands, and the quality seems to be coming up as well.

Scrapmech, the Stranger and Max the Dog, (with his awesome Interceptor), as well as a Sand Surfer

Rezolution minis

More Rezolution minis

Blood on the Sand...post-apocalyptic Style

Mini painting Competition

Aaron Lovejoy's shelf, not in competition..Aaron teaches painting classes at At Ease Games.

Mini painting Competition

Winner of the Fanatical Gamer's Society San Diego Food Bank Charity Raffle
(He chose the painted WarMachine Army...dang that's the one we wanted...)

Second place, wins a $200 box of Flames of War

Third Place, PressGanger with Noise Marine box set donated by a high school buddy of mine (John, that's you)

The boys started the day by trying out Malifaux, which they enjoyed SO much that they wanted to stay for the Achiever tournament at 9pm, and then play in the Malifaux 35 Soulstone tournament on Sunday.

They jumped over to the Infinity demo after they finished with the Malifaux demo. They still want to get into Infinity, but after Malifaux.

Chris Czerniak finally got enough people together to run an Airship Pirates game. It was the First time I had played that system, and I was very pleased with the richness of the world. They boys also seemed to really enjoy the game, though the younger kids at the table tended to cause a lot of issues...but many of them were hilarious!

(This post will be edited tomorrow...bed calls because work in the morning)

Con Report: Kingdom Con Sunday (Dust)

When we got to Kingdom Con on Sunday morning the DUST had just settled on the battlefield. So, we got to try out the Dust Warfare Miniatures game preview (Fantasy Flight Games) which is due to release soon.

Dust Warfare rulebook which will run $39.95

“They were no match for our Ludwigs.”
    –Sigrid Von Thaler

In the year 1947, World War II still rages. Allied and Axis forces wage massive battles with weapons derived from alien technology in the alternate 1940s reality of Dust Warfare.

Players of this exciting tabletop miniatures game control heroes, squads, and fearsome combat walkers as the world’s great powers battle for control of VK, the rare ore needed to fuel the newest and most powerful developments in weapons technology. Designed by renowned miniatures guru Andy Chambers, the Dust Warfare: Core Rulebook introduces some of the most dynamic and engaging miniatures game design available and integrates stunning miniatures from the fast and furious Dust Tactics board game.
One of the things I have to say about the DUST Miniatures, is, they're gorgeous, the detail is great, including hollow barrels on the large walker models, making them look like miniaturized versions of actual war machines which never existed.

The game seems to play really fast, it uses a system specific die which has two bulls eyes on it. Activation occurs with all forces on one side activating, though at the beginning of the turn, each force can use a single activation of one unit. I also like that a unit which is being attacked during an activation, can react with a single action also. Reactions are one of the core mechanics I'm really liking in these skirmish types of games, as it gives the game a nice flow. Suppression works well in the game also, each time a unit comes under fire, it gains a suppression marker, which affect how it can act in the future. One marker is removed at the end of each turn, so if you can get multiple shots on a unit, you can lock it down pretty well.

Fun game, not my favorite of the con, but it was definitely fun, the boys enjoyed it as well.

Epic Ian and Epic Sean prepare for warfare, DUST Style, great way to start the day!

A light walker, pretty awesome because you can easily swap weapon systems
WITHOUT having to  have two separate models.

This thing is freaking awesome!

So is this Heavy Assault Walker.

Greg's pre-painted force from Tactics.

I rolled 4 bulls eyes with 4 dice for defense, denying all damage.

Light Walker, on fire, runs through two enemies trying to light them on fire before it drops.
(Those Rocket fists HURT)

The resilient keyword on the German forces keeps them in the game longer as you get an extra die to roll on defense rolls.

The Germans have GORILLAS!!! How Epic is that?

Infantry units, Germans have Laser grenadiers, those lasers are wicked too, they're  continuous, so hits explode with re-rolls.
Note: If I got a rule wrong, it's because I only played it once, and I'm doing this from memory.

Kingdom Done

Well, that was a great time!

On Friday, we spent lots of time with the MIBs from Steve Jackson Games, playing Cthulhu Munchkin, Lord of the Fries, Zombie Dice and FRAG!. Sean and Ian also did the demo for Killer Bunnies and the Ultimate Odyssey , then played in the tournament for fun and prizes! Ian got second place...EPIC! Later that evening we got to play Cubicle 7's Doctor Who RPG. The game's got a point based system to balance out the doctor with the other characters, the vortex generator for Captain Jack Harkness seemed a bit too powerful and should have required a point each time it was used.  Though I think it had enough points to pull off all the vortex jumps I did. It was a fun one-shot game, Ian enjoyed playing the Doctor and Sean played K-9, when he was constantly hacking the system. I liked the ladder system for success.

On Saturday, we played more Munchkin and SJG games, including Cthulhu Dice. The Epic boys played in the Killer Bunnies tournament again, but got knocked out in the first round...not so EPIC! I went to play Dresden Files RPG while they were in the tournament, and I must say that is one of the best games I've played. I can't see Dresden Files being done justice under another system. The last thing we did was learn Battlegrounds, the card based miniature war game, $15 gets you all you need for an army, another $15 gets you an expansion to that army. (Though I learned future armies will be combined base and expansion in one box for $25.) No painting required. Ian won his Lizardman deck, then we also bought the High Elf deck and the Monsters & Mercenaries deck.

Sunday, was a lot less crowded, started the day with more SJG games, Zombie Dice, Lord of the Fries. We made our way down to the War Game room and finally got in on the demo for SUPER DUNGEON EXPLORE!, the 8-bit table top game, great game lots of fun. After that we got in on the Warlands demo, a fast and deadly post-apocalyptic game, we had, no survivors.

More on all the games we played as individual reviews as time progresses.

Sean and Ian interviewed Ross Thompson, founder of Kingdom Con; Jeff Bellinger, creator of Killer Bunnies; Tony Kenealy, co-owner of Aberrant, one of the creators of Rezolution and Warlands; and finally The creator of Super Dungeon Explore!, John Cadice.

Can't wait til next year.

Now the task of editing and uploading the interviews.

Kingdom Con

Kingdom Con is on the way. Three weeks and counting.

The boys and I are getting set-up for our first Game Con.

We're also going to have our first interview set-up pretty soon hopefully. An interview with a teacher at Woodland Park Middle School.
