Super Dungeon Explore 3D boards Kickstarter

This guy created some amazing boards about a year ago, and now it seems he's decided to bring them to everyone else with this new Kickstarter. Now these are definitely not for the faint of pocketbook. To get one unpainted 3D tile will cost $60...It is already funded at its current

More Caverns of RoXor (Super Dungeon Explore)

I ran Super Dungeon Explore SUPER mode for the boys, we realized we'd been playing some stuff wrong, and corrected it this game. (Namely advancing the counter for kills instead of wounds.) This made the game play a bit faster. Due to placement of the spawn points opposite the treasure chests, the boys went after the treasure allowing me to conga line the monsters from 2 spawn points.

I was using 4 spawn points and they had 2 characters each. (So it was sort of a mini super). I was running Rocktop and Fireflow with RoXor!!! as my boss. As last time, it took forever to make it to the end fight, but once we got to it, RoXoR was amazingly powerful, he's probably overpowered, and would beat Starfire 9 times out of 10.

I had two spawn points remaining when RoXoR came out, it was pretty much a done deal. The ability for RoXoR to activate 3 times in 1 turn combined with his burrow ability, and the wave 3; 2 action attack made short work of the heroes. It was a fun game, and lessons were learned. (Sorry no pics of our actual game this time, but enjoy these pictures of some nicely painted figures from Caverns of RoXoR.

You can purchase Super Dungeon Explore from your FLGS. From Sodapopminiatures.com store as well.

Caverns of Roxor $59.95
Fireflow Denizens $29.99
Rock Top Minions $34.95
Super Dungeon Explore $100

I know it's expensive, but it's a lot of miniatures, and a pretty damned fun game as well.

Super Dungeon Explore - Caverns of RoXoR

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

We got to play some SDE on Sunday. Man the new set is really fun, because its new and different, also also, not having to assemble all the miniatures is much less stressful. It will be a little more difficult to paint them, but I think we'll be...O.K.

We played just a quick 2 player game (Sean & I), with one Consul (Ian). Sean played the Star Guild Sapper , I played the Deeproot Scout. Ian ran the Fireflow  minions. A very nice change from the kobolds. I mean the kobolds are fun and all, but it got a bit boring after a year playing against the same guys. New challenges awaited the 2 adventurers.

The intrepid adventures enter the delve!

First assault.

Splut!

They just keep coming!

Awww, I just put those guys out... /sadface

Let's try a pre-frontal lobot...errr...assault.

Surrounded!

Incoming!
The Deeproot Scout sets up to fire off his relic
Aftermath of the relic, destroyed node, and popped gels.

Rockgut attacks!

The Star Guild Sapper strikes down Rockgut the Fire Troll, one round later the second node and the Fire beetle were dead. (However, we realized afterward, that Ian forgot the Tough attribute for Rockgut, and the White Armor 2 of the Fire Beetle...oh well, we'll know for next delve.)

Also, amazing sunset!

Fun Stuff (SuperDungeon Explore)

So we got in the new Super Dungeon Explore expansion Caverns of RoXoR!!!

The boys and I cracked it open tonight (mostly the boys), and we had a good look at the expansion. Gamewise they are very similar. No assembly required this time however, the expansion come pre-assembled. Which for people who are buying this for their kids, and have no miniature experience is a good thing. It does make it a bit harder to paint professionally. But it reduces the stress induction for parents. The minis are nice too, very reminiscent of a certain video game with plumbers.  From firey goo to all sorts of turtle men, this will be a great expansion to an already fun game.

Caverns of Roxor

We will be giving this a run-thru as soon as possible.

Super Dungeon Explore Caverns of Roxor expansions dropped at GenCon

After listening to This Just in from GenCon Friday night edition:

From what Shane Hensley said, the Hell on Earth - Reloaded (the Savage Worlds edition is) nearly sold out on day 2. Pretty epic. And the Explorer's edition of SW Deluxe is selling well...the $10 pocket edition...awesome! The Iron Kingdoms RPG Sold out on Thursday!! That's pretty Epic!!!

White Wolf games have licensed some of the White Wolf products out, so a lot of the OOP editions will be coming back to the shelves again.

The NetRunner reprint sold out already

Eastern Front Studios is now the official miniature producer for Kobold Quarterly starting with their Midgard line of miniatures, more official news to follow at Gencon this week from Wolfgang Baur owner of KQ.

Super Dungeon Explore - The Review

So now that we've played several games all the way through I feel comfortable giving my review.

First Glance: I did a huge first glance with our Unboxing post.

What you get: You get a lot in this box set. 22 kobolds, 6 wyrms, 8 heroes (+1 large "angry bear" form for the druid.) 2 kobold ogres, which are huge!, and a Dragon, which is a sculptural piece. You also receive 5 spawn points, 2 mimic chests called boo-booty, and 5 chests; around 100 cards and lots of counters. You also get 15 custom dice. You have 5 double sided game boards, which provide lots of different options. The last thing is the Adventure Tracker board, which tracks, loot, power meter, and provides a place for the cards.

A Note about the minis, they are made of plastic which doesn't take super glue very well, so Insta-set should be used. There is some flash, and all the pieces come already removed from their sprues, so for the person who is meticulous in their miniatures will need to do some flash clean-up and some gap fill. I was having issues with the legs of the minis as far as paint due to the scale of them, detail was difficult. I am out of practice though, so that could be part of it.

Main Review: Let's face it, this game is heavily weighted in favor of the heroes, they are heroes after all. The Consul (the game master), have the honor of running the monsters. The premise is this is a video game being played as a board game. Not the first to do it, as FRAG by Steve Jackson Games has been out for a long time, still it is unique, combining a unique gameplay experience with chibi style miniatures [Chibi is a japanese manga style where the head is over-sized with emphasis on the facial features, with characters having toddler proportions.] This is a great game to attract more females into the board game world, and is especially attractive for geek parents young girls.

Hexcast Sorceress, in all her Chibi Glory!

The dice are a unique d6 and an important part of the game, each having a number of stars (*), blanks and a either a potion, heart or combo potion/heart.
Blue Dice have 2 blanks, *, *, **. heart.
Red Dice have 1 blank, *, *, **, ***, potion
Green Dice, the best of the three, have NO blanks, *, **, **, ***, **** and the combo Potion/Heart.

Stats are represented by the dice you roll which applies equally to Monsters and Heroes.
Attack/Armor/Will and Dex.

Attack is used for melee rolls
Armor is obviously always important, as most monster attacks will target armor.
Will is used for Magic and initiative rolls!!
Dex is used for ranged attacks.

Both heroes and monsters have movement (represented by a video game movement pad)
Action Points (represented by a video game button)
Hearts represent life, while each character has unique potions.

The heroes are as follows:
Claw Tribe Barbarian
Deeproot Druid (and his Angry Bear form) Half-Elf
Ember Mage
Glimmerdusk Ranger Elf
Hearthsworn Fighter Dwarf
Hexcast Sorceress
Riftling Rogue Demonkin
Royal Paladin

Each hero has their own unique powers, which makes it interesting, some combos are much more powerful than others. The Ember Mage and Claw Tribe Barbarian are probably the most powerful of the bunch, but they really need to be backed up by a healer.

Gameplay starts with initiative, each side rolling their best Will. The winning side chooses which side activates first. Players can activate a hero, or the Consul can activate 4 skulls worth of monsters. Play proceeds back and forth until all the heroes and monsters have activated. Finally the Consul spawns more monsters. The heroes attempt to destroy the spawn points, once you reach the 16 bit mark, two things happen, the mini-boss spawns and the consul draws a loot card to affect all of his monsters. This can actually be one of the turning points for the consul if he gets certain cards.

There are three levels of play
8 bit: two heroes, 1 mini boss. (1 hour play time)
16 bit: 3 heroes, 1 mini boss, 1 dungeon boss. (1-1 1/2 hour play time)
Super!: 5 heroes, 2 mini bosses, 1 dungeon boss. (2-2 1/2 hour plus play time)

Truthfully, I think I prefer the 16 bit playtime, you get in, get the mini boss spawned, get a dungeon boss out and are done within 2 hours. The game can drag a bit, but I think as we get used to it, it will fly faster.

Family Rating: This can be a great family game, as it's a primarily cooperative game. It's a game that requires the heroes to work in conjunction with each other.

Cost: A Whopping $89.99. Now, you're paying for miniatures, 40 actual miniatures, not including the spawn points, automatically puts some value to that price.

Value: You get a very unique game, with a lot of minis, for an industry standard $90. It's worth it just for the minis.

Rating: Epic! This is a unique game with lots of options, it's good for kids and adults, boys and girls. While some people might not like the chibi style, it makes it endearing and one of a kind. Soda Pop Miniatures bridges the gap between manga and dungeon crawl games in a video game style format.

Super Dungeon Explore Painted Figures

Well I've started painting....unfortunately my paints are old, so I had to throw some colors away. Also, my good brush is missing, so the brush I have to work with isn't the greatest.

Here are what I have (though when I see the big pictures the errors are glaring!) I'll get a new brush when I can afford one and touch it up.

Unless any of the paint manufacturers want to donate some of course!! heh.

Not too bad considering I haven't painted a mini in many, many years...

Super Dungeon Explore...First Foray

All Set-up...Kobold Warrens with 2 spawn points, Sean is playing the Druid, Ian is playing the Paladin.

Good to go!

The Druid uses his first action to pop the treasure chest, then uses his brambles to slow the kobolds.
The Paladin moves toward the spawn point but doesn't have the movement to reach it.

On the Second Turn, The Druid transforms into his Angry bear form, but fails to inflict much damage

Our heroes are in the thick of it now...the Kobold Dragon Priest working with the Iron scales to make the kobold mob ruthless...However the Paladin manages to destroy the spawn point.

After spending an extra round killing kobolds, the heroes now injured,  move toward the second spawn point.

The Paladin is beginning to feel the sting from so many wounds, though a heart that popped from the druid, keeps him on his feet

After getting the second relic, Rex has appeared, this is where the heroes begin to fall. Rex uses his push ability to force the heroes away and the kobolds swarm

The Paladin falls, and fails to resurrect...it's getting late, so the Consul becomes ruthless to finish the game  to get the heroes in bed for school on Monday

One more round and the druid falls to Rex's cuddle.
The first play went well...a bit slow due to rules referencing, the boys made some tactical mistakes, such as letting the spawn points survive for far too long in the first couple rounds...they'll get better and then we'll take it to the gaming club.

Super Dungeon Explore ASSEMBLE!!!

The miniatures are pretty nice, they are simple to assemble, as the individual pieces have specific slotting system, so it's easy to figure out what pieces go where. This is actually pretty important, since there's no assembly handbook. The dragon is a sculptural piece and definitely needs adult assembly. I had to use clamps to hold the legs to the stand while the glue dried, I needed more hands to be able to use the insta set on the dragon, so the clamps were an easier solution.

Note: This is not a snap-tite kit, while some pieces fit wonderfully, most need to be glued. So parental assistance it needed, in addition experience with miniatures will definitely help.

Epic Sean preparing to assemble a REX!

So the Rex figures went together pretty easy, they needed a little bit of glue, but not too bad.

REX!!! Seeing double.

Dragon, dragon...he needed a bit more glue.

Kobolds!!! Assemble

Many of the kobolds require lots of glue, some assembly required...well maybe a lot.

Making progress...

Next day...more assembly

Here are the characters

Now it's coming together, after priming, the rest will be assembled.

This stuff will definitely help. The insta-set is of particular use since the plastic type used in these miniatures is one of the plastics which doesn't bond easily. The cutter for removing flash and the clamp for helping keep the dragon together during assembly.

--------------------UPDATE!-------------------

I have finished priming and assembling everything, here's the photos of them. All-in-all it took about 4 hours to assemble.
