I missed this announcement on Tuesday, what with RPG Superstar and all.

Speaking of GenCon...Savage Saturday gets more furious!

Gen Con and Origins: Savaging More Than Saturday!Savage Worlds at Origins and Gen ConAs most of you know, Savage Saturday Night has been outrageously successful at both Origins and Gen Con—maybe a trifle too successful. This year we’ll be taking a break from Savage Saturday Nights at Origins and Gen Con to concentrate on making more Savage Worlds games available throughout both conventions.
Savage Saturday Nights have been amazing, and we’ve been thrilled with the turnout and participation. But at conventions like Origins and Gen Con, they just don’t fit well into the scheduling and planning systems. One of the drives behind Savage Saturday Nights has been to make sure folks who want to play (or try) Savage Worlds get the chance, especially since games tend to fill up in the first few hours of registration at these conventions. The popularity of Savage Saturday Night at these two shows, though, collapsed most of the Savage Worlds games together into one slot on Saturday night, which is just too limited to get more people into more Savage games.
This year, we’ll be working with the scheduling systems to get more Savage Worldsgames every day so more people have the opportunity to play and the enjoy themselves, or to try out the system for their very first time.
You’ll be seeing more information about that in the coming days. If you’re a Savage Worlds GM, we’ll have some exciting news for you. If you’re a Savage Worlds player, we think you’ll be pleased as well.

Stay tuned here at the Pinnacle site for updates and the convention game news. Event registration for both Origins and Gen Con is now open!

RPG Superstar Round 2 thoughts

After having voted for nearly two weeks, and seeing probably 85-90% of the items, I'm setting my sights on round 2, hoping that my item makes it to round 2. After six years of submitting, learning, and trying my best to submit quality, balanced material, I might have done it.

Round 2 is the archetype round. Designing an archetype is tricky without being for a contest, making sure to balance powers, writing descriptions, etc, all while trying to not step on the toes of other classes. Then again archetypes are about specific types of archetypal ideals. While a Buccaneer (Fighter) is similar in theme to a Buccaneer (Rogue) the execution of said archetypes is a thin line. Dropping the heavy and medium armors for the fighter to get several skills on their class list is more balanced than giving them a full sneak attack progression.

Now the curveball. Paizo (in support of the MMO, I'm guessing), is having the archetypes be River Kingdom archetypes for this contest. Which made me throw out my initial idea for an Akiton Warrior...oh well. I'm running through several ideas now.

If you're a contestant, good luck, and I hope you make Top32!

Edit: Now that the contest is over, and Clark has posted the Top89, I realize my item was not public friendly, I'll post in the Critique thread to see what the Judges themselves would have thought of my item had they actually had a chance to look at it....which since my item wasn't in the positive voting sphere, makes me wonder about the contest as a whole, with items like Door Chalk making top89.

Voting for RPG Superstar

Sarah and I have been voting for RPG Superstar 2013....

I can't believe how many people don't pay attention to the rules, formatting, and advice given.

We're having a blast laughing at stuff though, just the visuals that some of the items create is hilarious!!

Also...PILLOW FIGHT!!!

RPG Superstar Done & Done

In other news, I did get my entry into RPG Superstar on time. I did some fine tuning to my final entry.

Here were some other ideas I didn't use, but aren't completely finished.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a cool item, but, very SIAC! Also it seems like more of an artifact. I loved the concept, but couldn't really make it work.

Titanic Lock
Aura moderate transmutation CL 15th
Slot waist; Price gp; Weight 5 lbs.
Description
A thick braided belt, made from the hair of a titan, bound by bronze rings inscribed with copper runes. The Titanic Lock allows the wearer to grow to huge proportions 3 times per day upon command. The wearer grows to the size of a huge giant. Gaining the following +8 size bonus to Strength, -2 penalty to Dexterity, +6 size bonus to Constitution, +6 natural armor bonus, darkvision 120ft, +10 foot enhancement bonus to your speed, in addition, air walk, mind blank, and true seeing are in effect while in Titanic form.

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, giant form II;
Cost ZZ gp
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the item I switched from, I hadn't finalized its abilities until now, I still think it needs work, but the overall concept is fun, I also thought of a cursed version that creates an uncontrolled Flesh Golem on a failed healing check while using raise dead.

Chirurgeon’s Mending Kit
Aura strong conjuration (healing) CL 13th
Slot none; Price gp; Weight 1 lb.
Description
Well-crafted adamantine needles, several lengths of trollgut string, and several squares of trollskin, wrapped in a small well oiled leather bundle. The kit has enough trollgut for 50 charges. The user of the kit makes a healing check (DC 15) to treat a wound. This healing check takes 10 minutes to perform. Failure consumes 1 charge. Success allows the healer to apply one of the following effects:

- Fast healing 1 for 13 rounds. (1 charge)
- Fast healing 2 for 13 rounds (3 charges)
- regenerate (5 charges)
- raise dead (10 charges)

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, Heal; Cost ZZ gp

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please feel free to use these items, but give credit where credit it due, these items were not submitted to Paizo, thus all rights remain with me, though I'm releasing them as CCNA and OGL.

Items which I had the idea for but never developed.

(too meta for RPG Superstar)
Two-stride Boots
Allows a wearer to use a 10ft step rather than 5ft step.
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, haste
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(abandoned early on, and I just brain-stormed the rest for now, I like it. This will probably be the first one I finish.)
Aldori Dueling Gloves
Supple leather gloves which appear to be well worn. Quite common in Taldor, and are often given to a duelist who does not know how to use an Aldori dueling sword. Grants wearer proficiency in the Aldori Dueling Sword. For those who are already proficient, once per day, they may double the bonuses from an existing feat related to the Aldori Dueling Sword. For example, a character with Greater Weapon Focus may double the normal +2 to hit, to +4 to hit. The effect lasts an entire round.
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, heroism

Finishing Touches (RPG Superstar 2013)

So at the last minute I scraped the Chirurgeon's Mending Kit in favor of an earlier idea. I will post the Chirurgeon's Kit tomorrow after the 2PM Deadline has passed. (Can't have a random person entering my item that just stumbles onto the blog at the last minute now can we?)

So putting on the final touches to my item, and hopefully I will be in the Top32!!!!  I think this item really has a shot, it tweaks the game rules, is very thematic for what it is, doesn't break the main rules, definitely isn't a spell in a can, IP Violation, etc. I used a Golarion specific location for it. It doesn't grant a feat, or steal any classes abilities. I hope the community likes it.

Good luck to everyone entering!!!

RPG Superstar 2013

So, looks like Sean is going to attempt to design an item, and Ian is going to try to submit next year. However, after the contest, I'm going to try to have them design something of their own every week. Should be Fun.

It's always so hard designing something of Superstar quality. It's easy to design magic items, but SuperStar quality requires really digging deep, throwing out crappy, trite, ideas. The writing must be tight. The idea must be innovative, rules twisting is a bonus, and of course, pricing must be perfect. If you're twisting the rules, up the price just a bit. Even if you designed the item perfectly to the rules as written, when you bend rules, you need to calculate what that tweak is worth.

If you're entering, Good Luck

Designing for RPG Superstar

No, I'm not posting my entry, I will post it after it's over.

But designing a wondrous item was hard enough when you were just trying to please the judges, go by the rules and post something special, which bends rules, shows creativity, and of course, is of Superstar quality. With the new "Voting" by Paizo members to get to Top64, followed by Judging to Top32. There's a whole new Paradigm. Now we have to design down to the layman, while designing up to the judges.

Once I found out the new shift, I instantly threw out two ideas, as they might not be close enough to what paizoans might vote for. If you don't make Top64, you're not going to make Top32.

1. Naming
This is in fact one of the hardest parts of the contest.

2. Design that bends and warps rules. My entry last Year, the Eye of Abendego, bent the rules, but maybe a little too much. I mentioned lightning bolts that could be shot from the necklace, but since they were derived from call lightning I used that damaged. This was off-putting to the judges. I tweaked the rules from hurricane force winds, halving them to produce a lighter wind around the character, but the judges thought it was awkward. (Strange though, now an item or spell in the Ultimate Equipment I noticed has the same effect...)

3. Pricing This is a true pitfall, my Ghostfire Torch, was innovative, rule bending, and though it was a single use item and priced that way.  With only a limited 10 minute duration, it's overall effect was thought to be worth more than 900gp. (900gp for a single use item it a LOT).

Overall, Designing for RPG Superstar is fun, challenging and frustrating all at the same time. Hopefully, I can make it to round 2 this year.

RPG Superstar 2013!

Well it is on again! RPG Superstar 2013. I've entered every year. My first year wasn't even a Wondrous Item, but an Anvil, which was more of an artifact. Every year I've improved, will I make Top32 this year? Competition is fierce. Are you going to be my competition?

Paizo Publishing is proud to announce RPG Superstar 2013, the sixth season of its popular RPG design contest. The search for the newest talent in RPG design begins now!
Over the last six years, RPG Superstar has discovered some of the best new RPG designers in the business. Designers discovered in this competition have found work writing for Paizo products or even joined the Paizo staff as employees. The staff are excited to see the great new talent out there, and look forward to working with the winners for years to come!
RPG Superstar consists of five RPG design challenges spanning several weeks. In the first round, members of the paizo.com messageboard community votes for their favorite open call wondrous item submissions, and a team of celebrity judges winnows those down all open call submissions to 32 finalists. In later rounds, the judges provide commentary and the messageboard community post their comments and vote on following round submissions until only four finalists remain.
This year's ultimate winner will write a Pathfinder Module to be published by Paizo. Three runners-up will win the opportunity to write Pathfinder Society Scenarios, meaning all finalists will be offered professional writing contracts with Paizo Publishing, and an opportunity to begin their freelance careers with high-profile RPG releases!
Last year Mike Welham's Doom Comes to Dustpawn emerged victorious as 2012's RPG Superstar winner after a week of public comment and fan voting at paizo.com. His winning adventure will release as a full-color printed Pathfinder Module.
Paizo has selected three veteran RPG Superstar judges to oversee the competition--Paizo Developer Sean K Reynolds, Legendary Games president and Necromancer Games founder Clark Peterson, and notable game designer and Kobold Press founder and publisher Wolfgang Baur. Additional guest judges will assist with each installment of the multi-challenge contest. The judges will critique each round's entries.
Starting at 2 PM Pacific Time on December 4, 2012, contestants will be able to submit their RPG Superstar entry. For the first round, that entry will be a wondrous item designed for use with Paizo's Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Each entry must be 300 words or less, and must include all of the proper mechanics and flavor. Contestants must submit their entry by December 18. Voting is open to anyone with a Paizo.com messageboard account, and begins on December 20. The judges will select the best 32 entries out of the 64 most popular entries; the top 32 are announced on January 22, 2013. Those 32 contestants will be assigned a new design task and their entries will be posted on paizo.com for the public to read, critique, and vote on. The designers garnering the most votes in each round will continue on to subsequent rounds.
Specifics for each challenge will be announced as each round begins. The winner of RPG Superstar 2013 will be announced on April 2, 2012. Do you have what it takes to be the next RPG Superstar?

Gen Con announcements Day 1

So not a huge amount of news coming out of GenCon today. You know the best thing about not going to GenCon, is the not assault on my nostrils....heh. But seriously, I'm really hoping next year will be our first GenCon!

Paizo announced that Steve Jackson Games' next Munchkin set will be the Pathfinder Munchkin set!

From the Paizo Blog:

Lisa Stevens signs the contract with Steve Jackson Games for Munchkin card game!
Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 02:57 PM Pacific
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game™ from Paizo Publishing is one of the world’s best-selling fantasy roleplaying games, in the true spirit of the classic dungeon crawl. Now Steve Jackson Games is proud to announce that Pathfinder is getting the full Munchkintreatment in a brand new core set...combining the unique features of the Pathfinder setting with Munchkin's irreverent sense of humor.   "We’re honored to be working with Paizo on Munchkin Pathfinder," said Andrew Hackard, Munchkin Brand Manager for Steve Jackson Games. "Pathfinder is a wonderfully rich world to play in."
Steve had no direct comment, as he was snickering and rubbing his hands together in contemplation of parodying TWO of the most popular fantasy roleplaying games of all time.
"We all love Munchkin here at Paizo Publishing, so this is a match was a no brainer," Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo Publishing stated matter of factly. "But of course," she whispered conspiratorially, "I really just wanted to see John Kovalic draw our iconic sorceress, Seoni!"
Munchkin Pathfinder will be a 168-card set, designed by Steve Jackson and Andrew Hackard and illustrated by John Kovalic. It will be playable as a standalone game or with any other Munchkin set. Look for it in stores in Fall 2013.

Privateer Press of course is debuting the Iron Kingdoms RPG!! Now this is something I'm really excited about. After talking to Simon at SDCC, I know that the game is based upon the Warmachine/Hordes  miniature game rules, rather than the OGL 3rd edition rules. Can't wait to get a good look at the rules.

Wyrd miniatures delayed the release of one of their Malifaux miniatures, due to Quality Control issues, that's reassuring, as quality is more important than a GenCon release!

When I find out more, so will you!

Listen to This Just in from GenCon!

Quick Review - Dragon Empires Primer

Just got this as part of my Paizo subscription...it's good!! While the Dragon Empires Gazeteer was underwhelming when I looked through it, this Player Companion, makes up for it.

This is part of the Player Companion Series of booklets, coming in at 32 pages for $10.99.

I loved Oriental Adventures back in the day, 3rd edition didn't re-use Kara Tur as the base setting, they used Rokugan, AEG's setting for Legends of the Five Rings; While I love Rokugan the translation wasn't so great for 3rd edition. So far from what I've seen of Tian Xia, I absolutely love it, Paizo makes sure to include all aspects in their settings, and this preview of the full book is no exception.

The book starts with a quick introduction, and quickly moves into the races, while it doesn't include the images of the races like the gazeteer does, it provides all the player info for the five non-human races; kitsune, Nagaji, Samsarans, Tengus and Wayangs. What's awesome is the three feats for kitsune, that play with their shape change abilities.

The next 14 pages covers 28 different regions, with 56 traits!!! I have a feeling one of the most selected of these traits will be the Quain trait for the Quain Martial Artist. This trait gives a straight up +1 trait bonus damage to all unarmed attacks. On the same page will be the most contentious trait, Chosen One, which is the same as Rich Parents. Which is often banned in games, and not allowed in Pathfinder Society.

The next two pages present 4 new archetypes.

Lotus Geisha is a bard archetype. It's decent, but not a class I'd play myself, however it will make an NPC-perance.

Next is the Sword Saint, a Samurai archetype, however this is probably the ONLY samurai I'd play as they're presented currently, as I feel the Cavalier wasn't the best choice for the class, They're too horse related, so this one that replaces the Samurai's mount. Perfect Fit. Iaijutsu strike acting against a challenged opponent, with drawing the blade and delivering a devastating blow similar to a sneak attack, however it doesn't note the damage as being precision damage specifically. The other abilities play off the Iaijutsu strike, increasing critical confirmation chance, effectively causing a "dazzling display", and finally deafening their opponent.

The White Haired Witch (Witch archetype), this is a really cool interpretation of a classic myth. The class swaps out the powerful Hex ability, so it needs to deliver, and does it. The hair able to attack as a natural attack that does 1d4+Int damage, with a free grapple attempt, which also uses Int instead of Str in the CMB. This power advances with the character, the reach which starts at 5 ft, quickly increases 5ft per 4 levels, and adding additional maneuvers to the hair, including constrict, trip, pull and finally strangle. To top it off the White Haired witch gains rogue talents at 10th and every 2 levels thereafter!

The final archetype is the Yokai Hunter (Ranger archetype). Having watched the entire Claymore series last month, this one intrigues me. However, I would have made it an Inquisitor Archetype (see below for my conversion.) It's a good archetype, especially for a Tian based game, where you want to hunt kami, oni and ghosts. Favored Yokai replaces Favored enemy, basically just changing the favored enemy list for a ranger, with the addition of a check to identify the Yokai. Yakai Sense gives blindsight against identified Yokai. Resist  Yokai gives some nice resistances and and the ability to break enchantment.

Combat comes next. 10 new feats and a New Samurai Order, Order of the Black Daimyo. The feats are Blinding Flash, Disorienting Blow, Enhanced Ki Throw, Feinting Flurry, Hold the Blade, Improved Feinting Flurry, Quivering Palm Adept, Quivering Palm Versatility, Sleeper Hold, and Stunning Fist Adept. Of these I think my favorite is the Enhanced Ki Throw, nice to cause damage with the ki throw.

One of the last sections is the Faith of the Dragon Empires, covering the Major Deities, and some minor deities and philosopher. In addition the Moon sub-domain. (a sub-domain of Darkness).

Finally, Magic, the Arcana of the Dragon Empires. Only three items in this section, but they are all very Asian inspired. The Oni Bloodline for sorcerers. The Void Elemental School for Wizards and a Sorc/Wiz, Witch spell, Call the Void. The Oni Bloodline is my favorite out of the section, one of the bonus feats is Weapon Proficiency (katana), and the level 15 Oni Healing being the best.

Edit: Forgot to add the Honor Section, new mechanics for honor...pretty well thought out, however, I would add some additional entries. Merely being accused can cause honor loss, until proven innocent. Levelling false accusations can also cause honor loss, so there's definitely room for improvement; but it's a good start

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yokai Hunter (Inquisitor archetype)
Favored Yokai remains the same, replaces Judgement.
Yokai Sense at 8th level instead of 7th level. Replaces Second Judgement.
Resist Yokai at 11th level instead of 12th level. Replaces Stalwart

Quick Review - Pathfinder Campaign Setting - Inner Sea Magic

Inner Sea Magic

A World of Magic!
From the tortured sands of the Mana Wastes, where magic is as likely to tear you apart as it is to not work at all, to the perpetually frozen northern nation of Irrisen where the winter witches rule, magic is a part of life in the Inner Sea region. Whether it is wielded by benevolent clerics to keep their allies fighting the good fight or unleashed by wizards in the form of scorching blasts of fire, magic can be the difference between life or death. Or, as in so many cases, the cause of life or death.
Inner Sea Magic explores the role of magic within this vast and varied region. Within this 64-page book, you will find:
  • A who’s-who of powerful and famous spellcasters from throughout the Inner Sea region
  • Details on four types of magical schools—arcane academies, spellcaster’s guilds, monasteries, and secret societies—along with rules for joining and studying with such organizations
  • Rules for several types of specialized or variant magic, including the chaotic power of primal magic, the secrets of shadowcasting, the traditions of Thassilonian sin magic, and the wonders of Varisian tattoo magic
  • Two new oracle mysteries (the primal-magic wielding spellscar mystery and the sinister Outer Rifts mystery)
  • More than a dozen new archetypes for all sorts of spellcasters, including the black-blooded oracle, the Razmiran priest, the shadowcaster wizard, the tattooed sorcerer, and the winter witch
  • Two new prestige classes—the cyphermage and the divine scion
  • Dozens of new spells, from Aroden’s spellward to zone of foul flames!
Inner Sea Magic is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder campaign setting, but can easily be used in any fantasy game setting.
by Jesse Benner, Jason Nelson, Sean K Reynolds, Owen K.C. Stephens, and Russ Taylor
ISBN-13: 978-1-60125-360-6

Quick Look: Published by Paizo Publishing for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. The book is broken into 5 sections, Magic of the Inner Sea, Variant Magic, Magic Schools, Spellcasters of the Inner Sea and Spells. As one of Paizo's standard Campaign Setting books, this one is a cool 64 pages, only 2 pages of wasted space, the index and OGL, on the first and last page respectively.

The first section starts out slow, but don't let this deter you, it primarily covers the areas and their magic, then covers the most well-known casters in the region, from Eando Kline to Baba Yaga.

The Variant magic section is pretty good, it covers the False Divine Magic of the Razmiran; The Fleshwarping magic primarily practiced by the drow; Primal Magic is the equivalent of the old Wild Magic, though primal magic is a more fitting name to me. Next comes the Riffle Scrolls featured in the Prince of Wolves book. Shadowcasting makes its appearance in Pathfinder as series of 4 feats. Tattoo magic as flaunted by its iconic representative, Seoni, the first part of this is the Inscribe magical tattoo feat and three magical tattoo magic items. The last of the covered magics is the Thassilonian Magic, the sin based magic of the Rune Lords.

Schools of Magic: A Bunch of new organizations based around the different schools of magic. Mechanically the schools don't make you different, but thematically, there are lots of Role-play interactions, and solid rewards that the schools offer.

Spellcasters of the Inner Sea: This is the meat of the product. With a nice amount of archetypes, many of which I feel should have been in Ultimate Magic instead of some of the weaker archetypes in that book.
This book also contains two prestige classes; The Cyphermage and Divine Scion, both solid Prestige Classes.  Archetypes include:
Black Blooded Oracle (oracle) An archetype that revolves around the blood, which is a curse and a boon.
Chelish Diva (bard) This is my favorite of the book, as it takes the Cheliax love of opera and brings it into a fun, flavorful archeytpe, that gains medium and heavy armor proficiency at 5 and 11 in addition to two diva specific performances.
Crypt Breaker (alchemist): An Osirion based alchemist with powers specialized for tomb robbing, and combating the common tomb foes, undead and constructs. And trap finding, which replaces brew potion, making this a great PFS Alchemist.
Dawnflower Dervish (bard):  Another Dawnflower Dervish archetype, this one being for bards. I personally have no problem with same named archeytpes for different classes. So if you want to play a Sarenrae worshiping bard, that twirls across the battlefield...this is she. (Note: this would make a nice Bladesinger for elves as well.
First Worlder (summoner): Another of my favorites, this archetype brings a couple of neat changes; fey based summon nature's ally, and a fey eidolon!
Hidden Priest (cleric): A priest that hides divine magic under the guise of arcane magic to escape persecution.
Mendevian Priest (cleric): This cleric class is designed to combat demons at the Worldwound, with heavy armor and tactical feats, it's a group oriented archetype.
Nimrathi Irregular (ranger): A ranger that is focused on stealth magic at the cost of heavier armor. The archetype also grants access to a single druidic spell per day.
Oenopion Researcher (alchemist) An alchemist with a slight twist on their mutagens, plus some later acid resistance.
Primalist (wizard): This is a gimme addition to the already fun alternate of primal magic. It makes them better overall, especially when it comes to primal effects.
Razmiran Priest (sorceror): The true power behind the false god. Much needed archetype for GMs using Razmiran false priests.
Shadowcaster (wizard): Another good addition to the new variant spell casters. Bonus spells and the ability to create more powerful shadow magic make this archetype solid.
Spire Defender (magus): The new class that's lacking archetypes, this one unfortunately falls short, removing the armors from his normal abilities, however he gains the normal abilities if he burns the feat or multiclasses (bit later for medium/heavy), but gains combat expertise and dodge as bonus feats, which might make it worthwhile for certain feat heavy concepts.
Sword of Valor (paladin): An Iomedae themed archetype, with initiative bonuses, the ability to grant temp HP with a channel, and the awesome ability to cause their opponent to surrender (under suggestion) after a smite evil.
Tattoed Sorcerer (sorcerer): Seoni and her ever familiar Varisian Tattoes, as probably the most pictured Iconic, this is an obvious arcehtype. It has some cool abilities, but at the cost of bloodline powers.
Tempest Druid (druid...duh): This is a storm based druid archetype, complete with trident. No animal companion, but lots of nice alternate abilities.
Vampire Hunter (inquisitor): As monster hunters to begin with, this archetype shouldn't be a surprise (and could easily be converted into a Lycan Hunter also). Abilities include, sun strike, giving a weapon sunlight damage bonuses, which even affect oozes and fungus based creatures.
Varisian Pilgrim (cleric): A wandering cleric, as traveler is a popular domain this becomes a no-brainer for those who love the travel domain, but want to worship another god. As a Varisian, they gain the ability to perform a Harrowing at 8th level.
Winter Witch (witch): This is the conversion for the Irrisen witches, as seen in Elaine Cunningham's Winter Witch novel. More powerful with ice magic, and lacking the ability to cast fire magic, these witches are pretty formidable opponents for either players or GMs.

Spells: The final section of this book is the spells. What magic book could be released without new spells? Well not this one. My personal favorite is the Bladed Dash spell (and greater version), which allows an 30 foot move with an attack on the way (greater allows attacks on every creature passed).

What magic book could be made with magic items? Um, this one, not a single magic item to be had. Guess we'll have to wait for Ultimate Equipment.

Artwork: Gorgeous artwork as usual. The cover is by Alex Aparin, gorgeous colors, though the perspective lines are off.

Usefulness? Must have if you play in Golarion. Many useful options if you play Pathfinder Society as well.

Cost: $19.99 for print version. $13.99 for the PDF version.

Value:  EPIC! at $20, it's almost worth more than Ultimate Magic in my opinion. This is the kind of book I want to see more of. As archetypes are the best thing in Paizo's Pathfinder conversion, I want more more more. I would have liked to see some magic items, but, I'm impressed enough by the rest of the book, that it would have been icing on an already delicious cake. I'd give it a 98%.

RPG News: GenCon

While I'm not At GenCon, all the big industry news comes at GenCon, as I hear about these news items, I'll respond. I know Wizards of the Coast and Paizo have announcements happening at GenCon. Rumors have been circulated that 5th edition is to be announced, but coming on the heels of "essentials" we'll have to see what happens. Though there is a precedent for releasing consolidated rules, before the new edition. (Rules Compendium released just before the announcement of 4e). Note: While I'm not a fan of 4e, I am a fan of RPGs and anyway to get new blood into the industry is all right by me.

Per Adam Daigle Twitter: Hardcover re-release of PFRPG Hardcover confirmed.
Good news for the people who are missing the original Out of Print Rise of the Runelords AP. I wonder what the price point will be.
